The story
George E. Starrett, a Maine-born contractor, built the Queen Anne house in 1889 for his wife Ann. It is known for its free-standing spiral staircase rising to a domed ceiling with frescoes that work as a solar calendar. Listed on the National Register in 1970, it now operates as a bed and breakfast and event venue whose proceeds support Bayside Housing & Services, a Jefferson County housing nonprofit.
The ghost story
The house publishes its own ghost stories: staff say the Starrett family's nanny still closes doors left ajar and turns off lights in empty rooms, and report seeing a woman in a black Victorian dress leave Room 5 and a woman at the Starrett Suite window they took to be Ann Starrett.
