The story
The Ocean Front Hotel Corporation built the Flanders, named for Flanders Fields, to Vivian B. Smith’s Spanish Colonial design; it opened in June 1923. In 1929 it nearly doubled its grounds with three large pools facing the boardwalk. J. Howard Slocum managed it until 1932, when Elwood F. Kirkman took over. It became a condominium hotel (‘condotel’) renting suites by the night in 1997.
