The story
Pioneer Charles D. Cole, Sheboygan County’s first postmaster, banker and register of deeds, built the Greek Revival building in 1848 as a store and trading post, using the second floor as living space. Its third floor hosted the first temperance society in the Midwest; the building later housed the Mattoon Brothers chair factory (1860) and a cheese-bandage factory from the 1880s until shortly before World War I. After falling into disrepair it was restored as a bed and breakfast inn in 1986, and it carries Wisconsin Historical Marker #389.
