The story
Emily Carswell Baker, widow of Racine mayor and state senator Robert Hall Baker, built the 30-room Queen Anne mansion in 1885 as a summer home and named it Redwood Cottage. After her death in 1894 it became an annex of the neighboring Lakeside Sanitarium, a refuge for wealthy Chicagoans taking a rest cure, and the inn says it served as a speakeasy during Prohibition. After 1925 it became a lakeside hotel and restaurant, best known as the St. Moritz, and it was restored in 2010 as The Baker House.
