The story
The 9,000-square-foot German Romanesque Revival mansion was built in 1857 for Alexander A. McDonnell, one of Madison’s early builders, on the rise then called “Big Bug Hill.” It later belonged to George and Carrie Pierce, whose name it carries on the National Register (listed 1972). In 1983 The Alexander Company restored the house as a small luxury bed and breakfast, and Trek Bicycle acquired it in 2008. It now runs as an 11-room boutique hotel with a regular jazz series.
