The story

Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company built this granite and limestone Richardsonian Romanesque office building in 1885-86 as its second Milwaukee home office, designed by Chicago architect Solon Spencer Beman. Later known as the Loyalty Building, it struggled as a multi-tenant office building before First Hospitality Group bought it and converted it into a hotel for about $19 million. The conversion kept the five-story skylit atrium, marble stair treads and wainscoting, using historic preservation tax credits, and the hotel opened in 2013.
