The story
The Sisters of Charity opened St. John’s Benevolent Female Free School on the site in 1824; after a June 1845 fire destroyed its wooden building, Visitation Sisters from Georgetown arrived in September 1846 and founded the Visitation Academy. After the Battle of Antietam in 1862 the academy served as a hospital for wounded Union soldiers. The Visitation Sisters left in 2005 and the school closed in 2016. The buildings reopened as the Visitation Hotel in 2024, keeping elements of the 1852 chapel, including Franz Mayer stained glass.
