The story
The Union Depot and Transfer Company built the Lumbermen’s Exchange in 1890 beside its Union Depot; the nomination calls it the first modern business block in Stillwater, with modern heating, plumbing, electricity and an elevator. Lumber firms, the post office and the Surveyor General’s office were early tenants, and ten walk-in vaults survive, several now inside guest rooms. The block opened as the Lumber Baron’s Hotel in 1995 and became the Water Street Inn in 2003 under Chuck and Judy Dougherty; a 2019-20 addition modeled on the vanished Union Depot added rooms and a rooftop bar.
