The story

The site had held hotels since the 60-room Greenman House of 1871 and the Windsor of 1878. In 1908 Lucius P. Ordway, an early 3M investor, secured the property, and ‘St. Paul’s Million-Dollar Hotel’, designed by Reed and Stem, opened on 18 April 1910 with James J. Hill and Archbishop John Ireland among the guests. In the gangster era Leon Gleckman ran his business from a suite, and a young Lawrence Welk played there on Saturday nights. The hotel closed in 1979 and reopened in 1982 after a renovation that moved the main entrance to face Rice Park.
