The story
The limestone building went up in 1893 for the Island Sash & Door Company and survived the fire that swept Nicollet Island less than a year later. Milling businesses used it in the early 1900s, and the Salvation Army ran it as a men’s shelter from 1913 for some 60 years. In the late 1970s the Minneapolis park board bought it, and it was rebuilt as the Nicollet Island Inn, with the south and west walls reconstructed and the old loading dock glassed in as the dining room.
