The story
A consortium of local businessmen built the hotel and named it for town founder Zackquill Morgan at the request of the Monongalia Historical Society; it opened with a gala on Oct. 16, 1925. Its street-level lounge was oak-paneled with crystal chandeliers, and a ballroom occupied the top floor. Eleanor Roosevelt spent the night of Dec. 15, 1934 there on her way to the Arthurdale homestead project in Preston County. The hotel was fully renovated in 2020.
