The story

The brick house on the James River and Kanawha Turnpike was licensed as an ‘ordinary’ by Aaron Stockton in 1839 and served as a stagecoach stop under the names Stockton’s Tavern and Hawkins’s Hotel. It was a Union quartermaster’s depot for several months in 1861. Around 1910 Margaret Hawkins Williamson added a third story and the wraparound second-floor veranda, and in the first half of the 1900s it housed managers and workers of the Kanawha Valley’s chemical and hydroelectric industries.
