The story

Cass grew from a lumber construction camp on the Greenbrier River; in 1901 the company began building two-story, six-room frame houses with ‘German’ siding for its workers. The town was laid out, incorporated and named in 1902 for Joseph K. Cass, board chairman of the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company, the year the West Virginia Spruce Lumber Company’s double-band mill began sawing. Houses came in three classes by rank, from day-laborers’ houses to managers’ homes. The state now rents restored company houses as overnight lodging.
