The story
George and Etta Champlin built the beach boarding house in 1898 and named it for Admiral George Dewey, victor at Manila Bay that year. Its advertisements offered ‘good rooms and table board’, and carriages met the trains at Wakefield; in Matunuck’s heyday (1898-1925) as many as 500 visitors a day reached the beach. The National Register nomination calls it a rare example of a vanishing building type, the seaside boarding-house hotel. The Matunuck Group now runs it with updated rooms.
