The story
Built in 1852, the Spring House was enlarged in the early 1870s with an annex set at right angles to the main building, and could take about 250 guests, second only to the vanished Ocean View. The National Register nomination calls it the best-preserved example of the full hotel as developed on Block Island, with its flared mansard, cupola and full-length veranda. The hotel says it has hosted Ulysses S. Grant, Mark Twain and Billy Joel, and a Kennedy wedding.
