The story
The inn is one of the Spring Street hotels that grew up south of Old Harbor after the federal breakwater opened Block Island to steamers in the 1870s. The 1974 Old Harbor nomination dates the building to about 1870. Today it is the main house of The 1661 Resort, with nine ocean-view rooms, a breakfast buffet and afternoon wine, and access to the resort’s farm and gardens.
