The story
The 1938 hurricane wiped out many hotels on Aquidneck Island, and the Toppa family chose to rebuild along Middletown’s shoreline. Their new beachfront resort, about 100 feet from Easton Bay, took roughly two years to complete and dates to 1940. It is Newport’s only beach hotel and joined Historic Hotels of America in 2000.
