The story
Local businessmen and summer residents financed the hotel by selling public stock and formed the American Hotels Corporation to oversee construction, which began in 1925. It opened at One Bellevue Avenue on May 25, 1926, to house guests of Newport’s Gilded Age society. During the Newport Folk Festival, Bob Dylan stayed here the weekend he first played with an electric band. The hotel joined Historic Hotels of America in 1997 and, at its centennial, is in a full restoration of rooms and public spaces.
The ghost story
Staff report sightings of a little boy cleaning the floors of the historic wing, and the sound of a grand party at night when no event is booked, according to lore published by Historic Hotels of America.
