The story
Henry Hobson Richardson was commissioned in September 1875 to design the commercial block originally called the Cheney Building, finished in 1876. Richardson switched from brick to rough-faced Berea limestone and Portland brownstone after seeing William Burges’s use of the two stones at Trinity College, giving the seven-story facade its contrasting, rugged look. When it was nominated to the National Register, part of the building housed the G. Fox and Co. department store. It now holds the all-suite Residence Inn by Marriott Hartford Downtown.
