The story
Sea captain and livestock farmer Shubel Smith, a Yankee trader born in 1775, built the house in 1807 on land from his father, per the inn. The 1996 NRHP nomination describes a late Colonial house with Georgian and Federal influences and a small rear ell that may predate the main block. The original barn was destroyed in the 1938 New England hurricane and rebuilt on the same foundation; restored, it is now the Yellow Barn, with six suites. The estate opened as Stonecroft Country Inn in the 1990s, and Jim and Alison Prenetta have owned it since August 2025.
