The story

Copper-mining executive Thomas Hoatson Jr. built the mansion for his wife in 1908 for $50,000, plus $35,000 in furnishings and stained glass; it was the largest mansion in the western Upper Peninsula. Hoatson died in 1929 and his widow in 1948; Maynard and Jane Hurlbert bought it in 1949. The current owners opened it as an inn in 1989 and in 1993 also opened the MacDonald mansion across the street as Victorian Hall.
