The story

After the copper companies suspended mining in 1932, county officials put the unemployed to work building roads, a golf course and a lodge, first with Civil Works Administration funds and then the WPA. The log clubhouse was built in 1934-35 of timber cleared from the fairways, and the golf course opened in 1934. The log cabins followed in 1936 and 1938. The lodge is on both the state (1976) and national (1980) registers.
