The story
The 15-story Metropolitan Building was finished in 1925 on a wedge-shaped lot at John R and Farmer streets, closing the vista down Farmer Street. Known as the ‘Jeweler’s Building’, it housed shops, offices and jewelry makers; luminous watch-dial work left toxic contamination that thwarted redevelopment plans. It reopened in December 2018 as an extended-stay Element hotel with meeting space and a rooftop patio.
