The story
Louis Kamper designed the 36-story Book Tower for the Book family to adjoin their 1917 Book Building at Washington Boulevard and Grand River; it was briefly Detroit’s tallest building from 1926 until the Penobscot Building opened in 1928. A planned 81-story tower was never built. After decades of decline, a restoration costing more than $300 million turned the tower into apartments, offices, restaurants and a ROOST apartment hotel.
