The story
The Ricker family’s Poland Spring House opened in 1876 and grew to more than 350 rooms, the centerpiece of a resort famous for its spring water; in 1894 the Rickers bought the granite Maine State Building from the Chicago World’s Fair and moved it here. The 1913 Presidential Inn is one of the original Ricker buildings still taking guests, with each room dedicated to a president or first lady. After the Rickers lost control in the 1930s, Saul Feldman bought the resort in 1962 and built the Maine Inn. The Poland Spring House burned to the ground on July 3, 1975, and Mel and Cyndi Robbins went on to run the resort.
