The story
Nathan Phillips, one of Dedham’s first settlers from 1810, built the first building, completed about 1815, and his family’s traveler’s house grew into the Lake House. In 1925 New York investor Harold M. Saddlemire bought it with all the land around Phillips Lake to create Lucerne-in-Maine, a resort for the wealthy. The Lake House was moved a short way and restyled in the Colonial Revival manner as the resort’s clubhouse, and a golf club and log lodge followed. Mismanagement and the Depression sank the resort, but the inn kept operating and now offers 30 rooms and suites.
