The story

Retired sea captain Jesse Pease chose the hillside over Somes Sound and commissioned the hotel in 1883; it opened in 1884 and drew wealthy summer families from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. After Pease died, his wife Grace ran it and sold it in 1908 to Dr. Joseph D. Phillips, whose family operated it until 1971. Wikipedia calls the main building one of the only 19th-century hotels left on Mount Desert Island. Claremont Hospitality, led by Tim Harrington, bought it in 2020 and finished a redevelopment for the 2021 season.
