The story
The inn says James Seward, who owned the local market, built the house in 1849. Congressman Smart, its later owner, is said to have entertained his friend Jefferson Davis there in 1858. In the 1870s William Alden, a descendant of the Mayflower’s John Alden, bought the house and added the broad pillared porch and what the inn calls the first bathroom in Camden. It is now a four-room bed and breakfast a three-minute walk from the harbor.
