The story
Portland hotelier Henry P. Rines developed the hotel, designed by Portland architect Herbert W. Rhodes, and it opened in 1927 as The Eastland, then the largest hotel in New England. Charles Lindbergh stayed there after his transatlantic flight, and in 1946 the hotel refused to let Eleanor Roosevelt stay with her dog, Fala. It passed through Sheraton, Sonesta and Radisson flags and several renamings before closing in 2011. The building was gutted and reopened as The Westin Portland Harborview on December 12, 2013.
