The story
Mary Colter designed La Posada for the Fred Harvey Company and the Santa Fe Railway, and considered it her masterpiece, inventing a back-story of a Spanish ranching family to guide every detail. It opened in 1930 and closed after 27 years. Affeldt and partners bought it in 1997 after three years of negotiation and restored the hotel and gardens. Restoration of the gardens continues with the Winslow Arts Trust.
