The story
James Thurber opened lodging at the head of the Bright Angel Trail in 1896, and Buckey O’Neill, later a Rough Rider killed in Cuba in 1898, built his cabin nearby. The Santa Fe Railway replaced the old camp with Mary Colter’s lodge and log-and-stone cabins, completed in 1935, keeping the O’Neill and Red Horse cabins. The lodge’s fireplace reproduces the canyon’s rock strata in order, and its lounge has murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie. It has 90 units, from shared-bath lodge rooms to rim cabins.
