The story
John W. Weatherford built one of Flagstaff’s first fire-resistant brick buildings after the town’s 1897 fires, then added a third floor and reopened it as the Weatherford Hotel on New Year’s Day 1900. Thomas Moran, William Randolph Hearst and Zane Grey stayed; Grey wrote The Call of the Canyon in a room now part of the Zane Grey Ballroom. The family lost the hotel in 1933. Henry and Lloyd Taylor bought it in 1975 to save it, rebuilt the wraparound balconies in 1998 and finished restoring 17 guest rooms in 2016.
