The story
Flagstaff residents raised about $200,000 in a month in 1926, with help from novelist Zane Grey, to build a first-class 73-room hotel. It opened on New Year’s Day 1927 as the Community Hotel and took the name Monte Vista from a 12-year-old’s contest entry. Mary Costigan moved her radio station KFXY into the hotel in 1929. Western film stars including John Wayne, Spencer Tracy and Gary Cooper stayed there while filming near Sedona.
The ghost story
The hotel says it has always been known for rumors of hauntings and that spirits are said to haunt some of its rooms and halls.
