The story
William Seward Webb and Eliza Osgood Vanderbilt Webb created Shelburne Farms in 1886 as a model agricultural estate, with buildings by Robert Henderson Robertson and landscaping by Frederick Law Olmsted. Robertson enlarged their 1888 cottage into the 2.5-story Shelburne House mansion in 1899, overlooking Lake Champlain and terraced gardens completed in 1913. The estate is now a nonprofit education center, working farm and National Historic Landmark. The house operates seasonally as the Shelburne Farms Inn.
