The story

John Foote built a boarding house and tavern at the foot of a mountain pass in East Middlebury around 1810, expecting the village to grow around the Vermont Glass Factory, an iron forge and a woolen mill. Wikipedia calls it one of the oldest operating traveler’s accommodations in Vermont. Its exterior was used in the 1980s TV series Newhart. Three East Middlebury residents took it over in spring 2024.
