The story
Colonel Jasper Murdock built an inn on this site in 1797, and President James Monroe dined there on July 22, 1817. A December 1889 fire destroyed the hotel and neighboring buildings; innkeeper Dr. W. S. Bowles rebuilt it in 1890 as a Victorian hotel with a wraparound porch and turret, renamed the Newton Inn. Charles and Mary Walker bought it in 1920 and restored the Norwich Inn name. Innkeepers Sally and Tim Wilson restored its Victorian character from 1991, and the inn brews ale under the Jasper Murdock’s Alehouse name.
The ghost story
The inn names its Walker House after 'Ma' Walker, the spirited 1920s proprietor it calls the inn's most famous 'resident ghost'.
