The story

Enos Lovell converted his two-story home into an inn in 1801, and by 1823, under Hyman Burgess, it had doubled in size. Court sessions were held there by 1841, and in 1865 Francis Phelps bought it and took his brother Harlan as partner. Ulysses S. Grant stopped in 1867 while campaigning, and Rudyard Kipling visited in 1892. The National Register nomination calls the three-and-a-half-story hotel the centerpiece of the village district.
