The story
The resort traces its beginnings to the Marsh Tavern of 1769, where the local Council of Safety met during the Revolution; it became the first Tory property seized after owner William Marsh sided with the British. Martin Vanderlip added the fluted columns in 1839, and the Equinox House opened in 1853 when an earlier house and store were incorporated into the hotel. Mary Todd Lincoln stayed in 1864, and Presidents Taft, Grant, Theodore Roosevelt and Benjamin Harrison visited. The hotel closed in 1972 and reopened in the 1980s after restoration; it now spans 17 structures in six architectural styles.
