The story
Jaffrey Center grew around the Third New Hampshire Turnpike, and by the late 19th century it was catering to summer visitors drawn to Mount Monadnock. The Monadnock Inn was created by enlarging a Greek Revival residence in the Colonial Revival style, with additions into the 1930s. Benjamin F. and Sara E. Lawrence started taking in guests there in the late 1800s, and it was the only Jaffrey hotel to keep operating through the 1970s and beyond.
