The story
In 1865 William and Mary Jane Dodge took in two travelers from an overturned stagecoach at their farmhouse, and in 1866 they formally opened the Mountain View House. Repeated additions grew it to more than 200 guests by 1911-12, when the belvedere tower was added. The Dodge family ran it until 1979; it closed in 1986 after 122 seasons and its furnishings were auctioned in 1989. After a $20 million renovation it reopened on May 22, 2002, and it was listed on the National Register in 2004.
