The story

John J. Emery envisioned the Carew Tower in 1929 as a multipurpose ‘city within a city’, and the tower and its St. Netherland Plaza hotel were finished in 1931. The hotel was fitted with rare Brazilian rosewood, marble and custom nickel-silver fixtures, with French Art Deco and Egyptian-motif interiors. Its restored murals, Rookwood Pottery fountain and Hall of Mirrors survive. The hotel was named a National Historic Landmark in 1994 and was a charter member of Historic Hotels of America.

The ghost story

Lore holds that a woman in a green gown, the 'Lady in Green,' wanders the 1931 hotel: staff told CityBeat of sightings in the elevators, guest hallways and on the Hall of Mirrors balcony. Staff tie her to the widow of a painter said to have died in a fall in the Palm Court during construction, though CityBeat notes no record of the widow's death has been found.
