The story
Col Alto was completed in 1827 for James McDowell, governor of Virginia from 1847 to 1849; the design is attributed to his cousin, amateur architect Samuel McDowell Reid. Henry St. George Tucker, Washington and Lee law dean and later congressman, bought it in 1898. His daughter Rosa Tucker Mason commissioned New York architect William Lawrence Bottomley to add a Palladian-style veranda and Rose Greely to design the grounds. By the end of the 20th century it had become part of an inn complex.
