The story
William Alexander, one of the area’s early settlers and postmasters, built the Washington Building in 1789; it was one of only two buildings to survive Lexington’s great fire of 1796, and the Historic Lexington Foundation made it its first acquisition after forming in 1966. John McCampbell erected the oldest section of the Main Building in 1809; owner John Lindsey added porches in 1907 and ran it as the Central Hotel for nearly 65 years. The foundation bought and stabilized it in 1971. The hotel later added the 1887 Sheridan Livery, once a stable and stagecoach depot.
