The story

The site has served as a tavern since the 18th century; Rawleigh Chinn, who owned the land on which Middleburg grew, reputedly built a tavern near the intersection in 1728. The present stone building was mostly built in 1830 for Nobel Beveridge, who advertised ‘a new House of Entertainment’ that year. It has been remodeled and enlarged several times, and its present look dates largely from a 1940s renovation by local architect William A. Dew.
