The story

A small hotel called The Homestead was built at the hot springs in 1766. Its 19th-century wooden successor burned in 1901, sparing only the 1892 spa building and some cottages, and the present Colonial Revival hotel rose from 1902; Warren and Wetmore’s landmark tower followed in 1929. After Pearl Harbor the hotel was used to intern 363 Japanese nationals, and in 1943 it hosted the international food conference that preceded the United Nations. Its golf course has the nation’s oldest first tee in continuous use (DHR).
