The story
German immigrant Louis Rueger opened a tavern at Ninth and Bank streets in 1846. During the Civil War the building was seized as headquarters for the Commodore of the Confederate Navy and was destroyed in 1865. Rueger later rebuilt, and the Hotel Rueger opened on November 5, 1913, praised by the Richmond Times-Dispatch as one of the finest hotels in the South. It is the closest hotel to the Virginia State Capitol.
