The story
Charles Bottger arrived in Albuquerque around 1893, worked for Tom Post at the Atlantic & Pacific Hotel in Old Town and reopened it as the Sunnyside in 1897. His parents bought former governor Manuel Armijo’s hacienda in 1902; it was torn down about 1909 and the Bottger Mansion went up in 1912, the first Old Town home with gas lighting. After Bottger died in 1914 his widow Miguela took in boarders, and the inn says Machine Gun Kelly’s gang checked in under false names in the 1930s.
