The story

Dr. Thomas Paul “Doc” Martin, Taos’s first physician, bought a 19th-century adobe house near the plaza in the 1890s, and he and his wife Helen, a batik artist, made it a gathering place for artists, writers and travelers. After his death Helen Martin turned the family’s adobe houses into a hotel, adding a new block of guest rooms (NRHP: 1934; the inn says Hotel Martin opened in 1936). The NRHP nomination counts seven structures, including the Martin, Tarleton, Hinde and Sandoval houses, and said in 1982 that the inn looked much as it had in 1934. It was listed on the State Register in 1981 and the National Register in 1982.
