The story
Italian architect Luigi Moretti’s curving Watergate complex, one of the first planned unit developments under the city’s 1958 zoning rules, was built from 1963 to 1971; the hotel and the adjoining office building opened on March 30, 1967. On June 17, 1972, five men were caught breaking into the Democratic National Committee offices in the complex, and the hotel says the burglars used its room 214 as a base. The hotel closed on August 1, 2007, stood empty through failed sales, and was bought by Euro Capital Properties in 2010; it reopened in 2016 with 336 rooms.
