The story
Marie Willoughby Rogers opened the Tabard Inn in 1922 in the center house of three N Street rowhouses, later expanding into the flanking 1880s houses; D.C. HPO calls it a fine example of the small inns and teahouses of the early-20th-century American Tea House movement. For three years during World War II it was requisitioned as quarters for Navy WAVES. After Rogers’s death, Edward Cohen, a Washington Post financial editor, and his wife Fritzi bought it at auction in 1974 and reopened the restaurant in 1977; an employee stock ownership plan was set up in 1993.
